WASHINGTON, DC -- Yesterday, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo made remarks ignoring the democratic legitimacy of President-Elect Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 election and threatened the peaceful transition of power by saying he was preparing for a “smooth transition to a second Trump administration.”
In reaction to Sec. Pompeo’s comments, Serra Sippel, President of CHANGE (the Center for Health and Gender Equity), an international NGO, issued the following statement warning the United States’ democratic allies to not normalize his threats to the peaceful transition of power, and refuse to meet with him until he acknowledges the President-Elect Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 race:
“Throughout his tenure as Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo has consistently undermined core American values of democracy and human rights. He has dismissed our allies, cozied up to dictators and authoritarians, and actively worked to undermine global norms promoting human rights.
“But his latest comment - undermining the democratic legitimacy of the United States, ignoring President-Elect Joe Biden’s decisive victory in the 2020 general election, and encouraging political violence by spreading disinformation - is a new, shameful low.
“Across the globe, world leaders, many of whom have congratulated President-elect Biden, must find Pompeo's actions and words reprehensible and more indicative of a dictatorship than a republic. This is a sad day when a Secretary of State continues to try to destroy our electoral system and, unlike Secretaries before him, engage in partisan political pandering. It is beneath the office.
“With democracy on the line, we cannot just pass this off as more Trump Administration bluster. We cannot normalize Pompeo’s threats to democratic legitimacy and the principles of a peaceful transition of power.
“Foreign leaders and diplomats must stand up for democracy and refuse to meet with Secretary Pompeo until he publicly recognizes President-Elect Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 election, facilitates a smooth transition to the incoming Administration, and removes himself from partisan politics."
