On January 6, an abhorrent scenario unfolded — the President of the United States incited a violent attack on our nation’s democracy by unleashing domestic terrorists on the Capitol. The world watched as the rioters ravaged the Capitol Building, a powerful symbol of democracy, and threatened the lives of our elected representatives and the people that work hard to keep Congress running. Five people tragically lost their lives because of the series of events ignited and enabled by President Trump.
The deadly riot carried out by white supremacists on Wednesday — yet another attempt by Donald Trump to tear down the walls of our democracy, quite literally — and the 147 Members of Congress that rejected the lawful election results demonstrate that U.S. democracy is fragile and cannot be taken for granted.
CHANGE was founded to hold the U.S. government accountable to its commitment to sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) as implemented through U.S. foreign policy. However, this coup attempt has made clear that we must also hold leaders accountable for efforts to subvert our political systems and democratic institutions. Ensuring SRHR for all requires a strong democracy both in the U.S. and abroad.
We are not surprised that Trump is attempting to steal this election as we have witnessed his eager willingness to cast aside the law for his own personal gain and numerous attempts by his administration to roll back human rights, and further marginalize women, the LGBTQI+ community, and Black, Indigenous and people of color (BIPOC).
CHANGE calls for the immediate impeachment of Donald Trump and the resignation or expulsion of the members of Congress who condoned Wednesday’s attack or perpetuated lies about the election results. Congress must reconvene immediately to begin the impeachment and removal proceedings. We also urge the American people to contact their Congressional representatives to demand their support for Trump’s immediate removal from office.
CHANGE supports peaceful demonstrations defending our democracy and demands the anti-democratic white supremacists, including President Trump, be held accountable for their attack on our democratic processes and institutions. This shameful parade of white supremacy and toxic masculinity confirms what we already knew — the racial justice movement is critical because white supremacy is alive and well in the U.S. This is even clearer when we look at law enforcement’s abhorrently tolerant response to this horde of racist extremists as compared to the brutal treatment Black Lives Matter activists consistently face.
The American people have made their voices heard and voted for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. We must ensure that the rule of law is followed and that the people’s decision be respected and protected. The future of our democracy depends on ensuring all people have the chance to make their voice heard. We refuse to remain silent as the peaceful transition of power is threatened.
