Over the weekend, Trump removed Inspector General Linick, fueling pre-existing concerns from global health advocacy organizations about the disbandment of key federal, independent watchdogs necessary to upholding democracy.
Linick is just the latest in a string of firings including Michael Atkinson, the inspector general for the intelligence community who informed congressional leaders about the whistleblower complaint that led to Trump’s impeachment, as well as Glenn Fine, former acting inspector general at the Defense Department tasked with overseeing $2 trillion in coronavirus stimulus aid.
Serra Sippel, President of CHANGE (the Center for Health and Gender Equity), a leading global sexual and reproductive health and rights advocacy organization, issued the following in response:
"The firing of Linick is about more than who walks Pompeo's dog. It is deeply disturbing. Pompeo is an agenda-driven extremist bent on imposing a radical religious agenda on the rest of the world and the US foreign policy.
“Making matters worse, he is a bad steward, using the State Department as his own private fiefdom, making employees do his housework, while he fires anyone who challenges or even investigates his impropretities. In the midst of a pandemic, this is not just concerning, but life threatening for people all over the world.
“Congress must investigate Pompeo."
