CHANGE Responds to the COVID-19 Pandemic

In this time of uncertainty and instability, CHANGE would like to express our shared concerns regarding the impact of COVID-19 in the U.S. and globally. We are incredibly inspired by the CHANGEmakers working in healthcare at great risk to themselves. Their sacrifice and commitment to resolving this global pandemic fuels our continued efforts to advance equitable health and human rights for all. Like many others, CHANGE’s team has shifted to remote work to ensure our safety and the safety of the more vulnerable members of our communities.

While the pandemic has required that we all adapt to working from home and learn new technology, our mission to advance sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) for all remains critical. We are also learning that the pandemic is impacting women and girls and other communities that are discriminated against disproportionately, from states limiting access to abortion, to global disruptions in access to sexual and reproductive health services and commodities, to increase in gender-based violence.

CHANGE recognizes that under the foundering Trump Administration, our nation needs strong international cooperation and accountability to adequately respond to health crises including COVID-19. We are taking action through:

  • Mobilizing U.S. public health institutions in a statement of solidarity with the World Health Organization (WHO), rejecting the Trump administration’s efforts to defund the WHO
  • Calling for the U.S. COVID-19 response to include the Minimum Initial Service Package (a series of actions required to respond to reproductive health needs at the onset of every humanitarian crisis) that includes supplies and commodities for HIV prevention and treatment and contraceptive access
  • Demanding the State Department to exempt COVID-19 relief aid from harmful policies like the Global Gag Rule, and to fund UNFPA to address HIV prevention and other sexual and reproductive health and rights for women and girls during the pandemic and beyond
  • Providing online trainings to local and global lawyers and advocates to support their efforts to advance HIV prevention for adolescent girls and young women and others who are discriminated against
  • Gathering and sharing stories of impact from our global partners with U.S. policy makers

Often, in times of crisis, the things that matter most come into sharp focus. At CHANGE, our vision of a world that respects, protects, and honors SRHR for all is clearer than ever. We are here to continue working for those that need help the most while supporting U.S. and global efforts to combat COVID-19.

Yours in Solidarity,

Serra Sippel
